Lifespan Faith Development is essential to FUUF's spiritual growth, and we foster such development in a variety of ways, including worship, religious education, and fellowship sharing. Our formal Faith Development program seeks to provide ways to learn about UUism, about the traditions that inform our worship and other practices, and grow in faith together. The FD program includes Adult FD seminars, Children's FD, and Youth FD.
Adult FD meets at 9:30 a.m. on Sundays. The new Adult Faith Development study is What To Do About the "Old Testament" led by Dr. Jeff Fager.
"Adult FD has begun to tackle the issue of dealing with a text that lies behind much of the religious context from which many of us came. Of course, the very label we apply to this collection of ancient documents says something about how we view it. Calling it the "Old Testament" implies that it is part of the Christian canon, the part that must be interpreted through the lens of the New Testament. However, referring to it as the Hebrew Bible, allows it to stand on the foundation of a people's history—the people of Israel.
The adult FD group will continue its examination of this library of books on the first and third Sundays of the month. While guided by Jeff Fager (Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from Vanderbilt), this study will be characterized by discussion. Jeff will provide some background information on the history, politics, and social systems of the ancient Near East along with an examination of literary forms used by the authors; however, class members will engage in dialogue to decide what wisdom may be gleaned from these classic works. This is NOT your parents' Sunday school!"
Faith Development meets at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday mornings. The new schedule is as follows:
A new program for our FUUF Parents, informal meetings are held every Sunday @ 9:30 a.m. Meet with other parents in our congregation and chat about all things 'family'.
Children's FD meets at 9:30 a.m. Sunday morningss. Designed for grades K-5, this flexible and fun program offers youngsters activities, stories, music and discussion linked to each week's worship theme, in order to enrich the children's understanding of and participation in our faith community and to provide opportunities for families to extend the worship experience by engaging together with the topic. Children share hands-on activities in a sacred space of their own, symbolized by their own lighted chalice.
Please make sure you fill out a registration form for your child(ren). You can pick up a form at the service, or request one from the Foothills U.U. Fellowship office office@fuuf.org.
"Building the World We Dream About" is a UU created program that was made to help UUs who want to explore the ideas of diversity, different cultures and race and racism. This program is a proven tool for helping UUs develop a greater understanding about racial/cultural identity and how racism operates as a barrier to building the Unitarian Universalism we dream about. The individuals taking part in it will have an opportunity to explore in a safe-space how the story of race in our personal lives, our culture, and our national history interacts with the personal, institutional, and community stories of our faith and world we live in. The idea is to come to understand the barriers racism poses to our UU goal of being a truly welcoming and inclusive faith/person, and practice together the skills of living in a multicultural Beloved Community.
We meet after services. New participants are welcome. Meetings will be SAFE-SPACE for kids to talk about any and all issues related to those mentioned above that they want to bring to the group. All conversations shared will be kept strictly confidential. Tina Copland, who is trained in anti-racist communication, will coordinate the sessions, and we will rotate bringing snacks to share.
